After many years working as a composer for Australian theatre, circus and dance productions, Ania returns to her roots as a pianist, creating a diverse album of dramatic, elegant and lyrical solo pieces that cross between contemporary classical, Latin and cinematic genres.
Says Ania of her music: “This album is a series of musical meditations on the complexities of the world we are currently living in—a world that can be terrifyingly overwhelming and deeply isolating, but also extraordinarily beautiful. It is also a reflection of my musical growth as an artist over the past decade”. The diversity of Ania's musical background and experience is heard on My Shadow Is My Only Follower, which creates an evocative, idiosyncratic sound-world that challenges listener expectations of a solo piano album. The tracks were recorded on fellow pianist Nat Bartsch’s upright piano in Thornbury, and mixed/mastered by Lachlan Carrick. My Shadow Is My Only Follower was released on June 26 2020 with an online concert, supported by the City Of Melbourne COVID-19 Arts Grants. The live performance of the album features a bespoke visual score of projections created by Ania and visualist Sean Healy. |
